Khabib Nurmagomedov stunned the world last night shortly after a masterclass victory over his opponent Justin Gaethje, via a second-round submission, by announcing his retirement from the sport of mixed martial arts.
On an extremely emotional night for the Russian superstar, Khabib issued an open request to the UFC to be crowned the undisputed pound-for-pound fighter of all time.
Mere fans can hardly dispute Khabib’s claim and can only sit in awe of his unprecedented achievements in the sport of MMA. However, that’s not what Jon Jones thinks, it’s not what he thinks at all …
Jones, shortly after Khabib’s claims, issued an open objection, stating that Khabib’s accomplishments don’t come close to rivaling what he’s done in the cage.
Nurmagomedov asked the UFC to place him at the top of any rankings issued in the future, stopping any doubts that suggest he is not the best ultimate fighter of all time.
Khabib faced Gaethje at UFC 254 last night in a “Fight Island” event and won by submission in the second round, extending his winning streak to a mind-blowing 29-0, a record unmatched in top-level mixed martial arts.
After the fight, Khabib spoke to UFC commentator Jon Anik, saying, “There is only one thing I want from the UFC, to be ranked as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world because I deserve it.”
This was Khabib’s final request from the company before his retirement, a request that was not taken kindly by fellow competitor Jones, who is in contention for that position.
Jones, originally full of praise for his Russian colleague, has received backlash from fans, calling him “salty” for his comments that will emerge later.
Jones took to Twitter to express his frustration at Nurmagomedov’s request: “15 world titles, the numbers don’t lie.
“I’m just going to ask for the heavyweight championship belt and see if they give it to me. Since we can only order things now.
“If we’re going to have a popularity contest, I’d be happy to take my L. This shit has nothing to do with fame or being a good person. I’ve given [given] all my adult life to this game, I owe it to myself to speak. “
Of course, Jones has a legitimate right to claim his claim, but the way he reacted last night has not been well received by UFC fans.
Jones has been a controversial figure for most of his professional career, in and out of the cage, with parts of his career overshadowed by arrests and incidents outside of fights.
On fans calling him “salty,” Jones went on to say: “The saddest thing about this situation is that the company is probably going to honor your request and demote me. It will be an insult, but not a huge surprise. as motivation.
“Not salty at all, I really respect Khabib, I honor the kind of man he is. But being the best is not won. Unfortunately, four title fights are not, no matter how much we all like them.”
The latest UFC rankings will be released in less than a week and it remains to be seen who will be indisputably crowned the best pound-for-pound fighter in company history.
