Nagapattinam:

DMK’s youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested in Nagapattinam on the second day of his party’s 75-day campaign ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to be held early next year.

He was arrested in Akkaraipettai, a fishing village in Nagapattinam, police said.

Mr. Udhayanidhi visited the village and interacted with the fishermen on the occasion of World Fisheries Day.

Earlier in the day, accompanied by former Tamil Nadu ministers KN Nehru, U Mathivanan, MRK Panneerselvam and others, Udhayanidhi set out on a sea boat trip with the fishermen.

When he returned to shore, a police team led by the Nagapattinam Additional Superintendent of Police arrested Udhayanidhi for allegedly violating the social distancing rules of the COVID-19 pandemic and for carrying out the campaign without permission. They took him to a local wedding hall.

Udhayanidhi, the son of DMK chairman MK Stalin, had launched the party’s campaign from Tirukkuvalai near Nagapattinam, the birthplace of the late party chief M Karunanidhi, on Friday.

He said he embarked on the campaign to bring his father Stalin’s message to various parts of the state to end the “darkness that has taken hold of Tamil Nadu.”

Shortly after starting the show, the actor-politician was briefly detained along with his followers in this district for allegedly violating COVID-19 regulations, which sparked protests in different parts of the state by DMK activists.

Speaking to reporters in Akkaraipettai, Udhayanidhi claimed that AIADMK was concerned about public support for the DMK and was therefore trying to prevent the DMK from launching the campaign.

Meanwhile, Mr. Udhayanidhi’s arrest led to roadblocks by DMK cadres at various locations in the Nagapattinam district.
