The ambitious 701 km highway is expected to be fully operational by May 1, 2022, connecting the state capital with its second capital at a total project cost of around 55 billion rupees.

In 2017, farmers in 10 districts opposed the acquisition of land for the project. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, which is implementing the project, has said that the entire land acquisition process has been completed smoothly.

The highway will connect 10 districts, 26 talukas and 392 villages between Mumbai and Nagpur. With 24 exchanges, it will also connect many tourist spots such as Lonar Lake, Ajantha-Ellora Caves, Pench National Park, Shegaon, Sevagram, Shirdi, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Daulatabad.

The project, which has been delayed due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, also includes the development of 20 municipalities and nodes along the highway route.
