MUMBAI: Prime Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray has directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to explore alternative sites for the Metro 3 car shed, an official said Friday.
The direction comes as the Mumbai High Court suspended an order passed by the Mumbai Suburban District Collector on Wednesday allocating 102 acres of saline land in the Kanjurmarg suburbs for the construction of an integrated carriage shed. meter.
“The prime minister has asked the MMRDA to explore other sites for the subway car shed,” said the official with the state Department of Urban Development.
However, he declined to elaborate.
Following the HC order, there were reports in a section of the media about the state government exploring some other potential sites for the car shed, including the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
The Center and the Shiv Sena-led MVA government in Maharashtra are embroiled in a dispute over ownership of the Kanjurmarg land that was assigned by the state to build the car depot, which was previously planned in Aarey Colony, a green belt. in the suburbs of Goregaon.
The Union government had filed a petition in the superior court challenging the order of October 1, 2020 approved by the collector that assigned the land for the construction of the car shed, and said that the land belongs to the department of salt (del Center).
Maharashtra Chief Deputy Minister Ajit Pawar had indicated on Wednesday that the state government could address the Supreme Court against the high court’s order to suspend the allocation of Kanjurmarg salt land for the car shed.
