Dubai:

The UAE on Sunday condemned the “heinous” assassination of a top Iranian nuclear scientist for which Tehran blamed Israel, urging all parties to exercise restraint.

“The United Arab Emirates condemns the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh and (calls) on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid dragging the region to new levels of instability and threat to peace,” the Foreign Ministry tweeted.

He described Fakhrizadeh’s murder as a “heinous crime”.

Fakhrizadeh, dubbed by Israel as the “father” of Iran’s nuclear program, was fatally wounded on Friday when the assailants attacked his car and participated in a shootout with his bodyguards outside Tehran, according to the Iranian Defense Ministry.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stressed that the country will seek revenge in “due time” and will not fall into a “trap”.

He blamed “the evil hands of global arrogance, with the usurping Zionist regime as a mercenary.” Iran generally uses the term “global arrogance” to refer to the United States.

The harsh condemnation of the UAE comes weeks after the Gulf nation normalized ties with Israel.
