Two stranded people, who were evacuated from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday amid closure restrictions imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease outbreak (Covid-19), tested positive on Saturday, the first said. Kerala Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Both people, who have been infected with the disease-causing SARS-CoV-2, arrived in Kerala on Thursday on two special Air India flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE, the CM said.

Vijayan warned that the state must maintain maximum vigilance due to the influx of expatriates and everyone who is stranded in other parts of the country due to closure restrictions.

Three flights from the Persian Gulf are expected to arrive in Kerala as part of the “Vande Bharat Mission,” the largest evacuation since Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 on Saturday night.

Similarly, a naval ship, carrying 650 stranded people from the Maldives, will arrive at the port of Kochi on Sunday.

The CM said Kerala would observe a complete shutdown on Sunday in an attempt to intensify its vigil and that only essential services would be allowed.

“If we let our guard down at this point, we will relinquish our advantage. We will continue our strict vigilance. We cannot allow people to enter Kerala without valid passes. It is mandatory that people coming from other states carry passes from their place of origin to chosen destination in an attempt to contain the viral outbreak, “he added.

The CM also announced that the state government would organize special trains from New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, etc. to bring back all those who are stranded.

“We are in talks with the Ministry of Railways of the Union. Among the stranded, students, pregnant women and the elderly will have the first priority to return home,” he added.
