Delhi police arrested two dhaba owners for allegedly raping a Mumbai-based event manager at a five-star hotel in the national capital. The two men were arrested on Saturday, November 21, according to police.
The two arrested, Micky Mehta, 57, and Navin Dwar, 46, are residents of Lajpat Nagar and Saket, respectively, in Delhi, although their restaurant is located near Sonipat, Haryana.
The 27-year-old woman has told police that she met her Facebook friend, Mr. Mehta, and his partner, Mr. Dwar, on November 18 and 19.
On her way back from Connaught Place to the hotel located in the town of Aerocity near the Delhi airport on November 19, Mr. Dwar began to misbehave her, she alleged. However, after dropping her out of the hotel, along with Mr. Mehta, she left.
The woman alleged that Mr. Mehta later raped her inside her hotel room. After the crime, he took her to the town of Anand Vihar, left her there and fled.
The arrested duo have been taken into judicial custody, police said.
In Delhi, according to a PTI report, more than six women are raped every day. About 98% of the rapes charged in Delhi “were close relatives or acquaintances” of the survivors or victims, Delhi police told a parliamentary panel on 18 November. In 44% of the cases, the accused was a member of the family. or a friend of the family, a relative in 13 percent and a neighbor in 12 percent of the cases, police said.
