Two people from BSF succumbed to Covid-19 on Thursday, even as the total number of infections in the force rose to 200. Along with CRPF (161), ITBP (45) and SSB (13), total infections in the paramilitary forces now 400 have crossed. Except for 30 cases in Tripura, all cases have been reported in Delhi.
In addition, 41 more people on the force tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, bringing total infections in the BSF to 193. Of the 41 new infections, 12 belonged to the company that was deployed to maintain law and order in Jama Masjid and Zones of Chandani Mahal with the Delhi Police. This company of 94 employees now has 73 positive cases.
Among the two BSF staff members who died, one had kidney problems and had been on dialysis, while the other had no comorbidities. The latter was 45 years old and died within two days of developing symptoms. The results of his test came three days after his death.
Sources said the BSF man with kidney disease was admitted to the RK Puram-based force hospital and contracted the disease during a visit to a super-specialized hospital for dialysis. Through him, many others at the BSF hospital became infected, including two cancer patients as well.
Deeply sore to know about the loss of our two mighty men @BSF_India soldiers fighting against COVID-19. I join millions of Indians to mourn their premature disappearance. Condolences to the bereaved families. May God give you strength to resist this tragic loss. Om Shanti Shanti.

Interior Minister Amit Shah expressed regret at the development. “Deeply sore to know about the loss of our two brave soldiers @BSF_India, who were fighting against Covid-19. I join millions of Indians to mourn their premature disappearance. Condolences to the bereaved families. May God give you strength to resist this tragic loss. Om Shanti Shanti, ”he tweeted.
In an official statement, the BSF said: “Prahari parivar is distressed by the death of two BSF staff members during this pandemic. A seriously ill patient who had contracted the Covid-19 infection died while visiting super specialty clinics for treatment. Another BSF man died on Monday at Safdarjung Hospital, where he was admitted on May 3. He was transferred from the normal ward to the ICU on May 4. After her death, before the autopsy, the COVID-19 test was performed and the result was positive late on the night of May 6, Wednesday. “
“DG BSF and all ranks mourn the premature disappearance of the BSF crown warriors. The BSF fraternity conveys condolences and stands firm with the grieving families, “he added.
BSF spokesman Shubhendu Bharadwaj said most of those infected were deployed with the Delhi police for internal security tasks during the critical phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The BSF has been aggressively tracking the primary, secondary and tertiary contacts of all who tested positive and quarantined them. All of them are tested for Covid-19. Sources said what has made the situation worse for all forces, including the BSF, is the fact that the vast majority of cases were asymptomatic and the soldiers largely live in barracks where proximity is natural.
“So if a staff contracts the infection and is asymptomatic, the virus will spread rapidly throughout the barracks,” said a paramilitary official.
In Tripura, where more than 30 BSF staff members tested positive, staff also face a reprimand from the general public. In one case, after sick staff vomited halfway to the hospital, local villagers agitated and accused BSF of spreading the virus, sources said.
“While all the instructions and protocols issued by MoHFW are strictly followed, it is pertinent to mention that BSF establishments have established well-equipped quarantine / isolation centers according to prescribed standards to prevent contagion. BSF Composite Hospitals are dedicated COVID Health Centers (DCHC) and diligently handle cases of BSF personnel, ”said Bharadwaj.
