In 2011, the IPL had 10 teams when the Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were part of the tournament.
The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the Indian Premier League (IPL) will have 10 teams from 2022. The decision centered on the Annual General Assembly on Wednesday 24 December.
However, the next edition of the T20 tournament will feature eight teams, which should be a relief for the franchises. There is not much time left for IPL 2021 after the 2020 edition ended on November 10 with the Mumbai Indians crowned as champions for the fifth time in eight years.
IPL franchises against the mega auction
Several franchises also opposed a mega auction, having already suffered losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been wreaking havoc for the past 10 months or so.
In another development, the BCCI also echoed ICC decision to include cricket in the T20 format for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games “after receiving some clarification from the International Olympic Committee.”
“Look, the BCCI is an autonomous body and it would like to maintain its autonomy. Our legal team is looking for some clarification. Obviously cricket at the Olympics is great for the game. Hopefully we can move in the right direction, ”said a member who was part of the AGM.
The world’s richest cricket board also decided that if the Indian government does not grant it a full tax exemption to host the T20 World Cup in 2021, it would accept the world body’s $ 390 million deduction.
“We have told the ICC that we will contact our government to obtain a tax refund, but if we do not obtain that exemption, the amount, which is around USD 123 million, will be deducted from our annual income, so we will obtain around USD 267 million. But India is the host of the 2021 T20 World Cup, ”mentioned a source.
Meanwhile, Twitterati had a bit of fun after BCCI presented their decision of a 10-team IPL starting in 2022. In 2011, the IPL had 10 teams when Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were part of the tournament. Netizens on Twitter posted a series of memes about BCCI’s decision.
