Social media giant Twitter submitted a written apology to a parliamentary panel for hurting the feelings of the people of India by showing Leh as part of China on its geolocation service, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said on Wednesday. , adding that the company was run. to rectify the error before November 30.
“Twitter Inc has submitted an apology in the form of an affidavit before the parliamentary committee. It has been signed by Damien Kieran, the privacy director of Twitter, which is based in San Francisco,” Lekhi told NDTV.
“The affidavit from Twitter says it apologizes for hurting India’s sentiments and is working to correct the geotagging error by November 30,” he added.
Lekhi, who heads the panel, said that any company that wants to do business in the country will have to comply with its laws.
There was outrage on social media after the geo-location feature of the microblogging website showed Leh, Ladakh’s largest city, as part of China.
Officials from Twitter India had appeared before the Parliamentary Joint Committee examining the personal data protection bill on the issue last month and said they understood India’s sensitivity on the matter, Lekhi said in October, adding that the panel I thought the explanation offered. it was “inappropriate”.
“This is inappropriate. It is not just a matter of sensitivity. It goes against the sovereignty and integrity of India,” he had said.
After the meeting, a Twitter spokesperson said the geotagging flaw was quickly resolved. “We are committed to openness and transparency around our work and will stay in regular contact with the government to share timely updates,” the company said.
The central government, in a heavily drafted letter last month, had warned Twitter, saying that any lack of respect for the country’s sovereignty and integrity was totally unacceptable.
Troops from India and China have been locked in a clash in eastern Ladakh since April, when the Chinese People’s Liberation Army breached the Royal Line of Control. In June, 20 Indian soldiers had been killed in the line of duty in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley.
The two countries have had several rounds of talks at the military and diplomatic level to resolve the deadlock.
