A day after the president and first lady of the United States, Donald Trump, and Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus, social media seems to be full of bad jokes and death wishes for Trump, 72 years old.

The barrage of insensitive tweets increased to such an extent that social media platform Twitter had to come out and declare that it will suspend accounts that share death wishes for Trump.

According to the microblogging platform, the tweets wishing for the death of the president after his Covid-19 diagnosis were in conflict with the platform’s policies and may lead to the suspension of such accounts.

Uploading to the platform, Twitter warned that waiting for the death or bodily harm of the president was against its policies and that doing so would mean automatic suspension.

Even as multiple people in the United States blame Trump for causing the deaths of 205,000 Americans by downplaying the coronavirus pandemic, several people criticized such callous tweets.

However, others pointed out that Twitter was being biased towards the president, as others, such as queers, women and people of color, were regularly threatened with death on the platform.

Twitter, however, has refused to cower from the criticism. In a statement given to The Guardiansaid a spokesperson, “Tweets wishing or expecting death, serious bodily injury or fatal illness against anyone are not allowed and should be removed.” The company also said that policy, which had been in effect since April, applied to all Twitter users on the platform and not just Trump.

What about other social networking sites? According to a report in Vice, one can expect the death of the president, as long as they don’t label him.
