Social media giant Twitter appears to have overridden one of its privacy features. The option that allowed users to control what personal data was sent to Twitter’s business partners has been removed for users. The company announced that it started sharing some personal data with its advertisers, adding that this would help the company continue to operate as a free service.

Users have been receiving a notification that says:

Your control over the information Twitter shares with your business partners has changed. Specifically, its ability to control mobile app advertising metrics has been removed, but you can control whether you share some non-public data to improve Twitter’s marketing activities on other sites and apps. These changes, which help Twitter continue to operate as a free service, are now reflected in its configuration.

So what personal data is shared? Basically it includes information about what type of ads a user saw on Twitter and how they interacted with them. The data would be shared anonymously, which means that the username, email, phone number or Twitter username will not be given away.

An option in Twitter’s privacy settings called “Share your data with Twitter’s business partners” allowed users to disable the sharing of some of their personal information. While the settings are still available, you no longer have control over “mobile app advertising metrics”. Currently, the setting is only available to users in Europe or the UK, where you can still choose not to share “non-public” personal information such as device identifiers.
