Even as Delhi celebrated the occasion of Dussehra with great fanfare and burned effigies of Ravana on Sunday, Delhi’s air quality remains in the category of ‘very poor’ even on Monday as the general air quality index (AQI) it was recorded in 349. A slight increase in AQI was observed with an increase in the concentration of pollutants both PM10 and PM2.5.

The air quality monitor of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the System of Investigation and Forecasting of Air Quality and Weather (SAFAR), said on Sunday that some places entered the ‘severe’ zone, but that it will be short duration as winds are expected to increase slightly.

Areas such as Mundka, Anand Vihar, Jahangirpuri, Vivek Vihar and Bawana recorded ‘severe’ levels of air pollution on Sunday morning, but some of them entered the ‘very poor’ area on Sunday night.

Experts say that the severe category affects people’s health and is specifically harmful to those with existing illnesses. An AQI between 0-50 is marked as good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is bad, 301-400 is very bad, and 401-500 is considered severe.
