During a meeting with the Texas governor in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump told reporters that he had little contact with the man and that he would be examined daily in the future.
Neither Trump nor Pence wore masks during the meeting. People working around the president in the White House have received regular tests for the coronavirus. But staff, Secret Service agents, and guests have not worn masks in the west wing.
“No matter what you do, testing is not a perfect art. So we test once a week. Now we are going to test once a day. But even when tested once a day someone could, something happens where they get something, “Trump said.
“I have had very little contact with this gentleman. Know who he is, good person … Yes, it is a bit strange, but it is one of those things,” he said.
A White House spokesman previously said that Trump and Pence had tested negative for the virus.
“Recently, the White House Medical Unit notified us that a member of the United States Army, who works on the White House campus, has tested positive for coronavirus. Since then, the president and vice president have tested negative for the virus and remain in excellent health, “spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement. Gidley declined to elaborate on the role of the military member.
On April 3, the White House said that anyone expected to be close to Trump or Pence would be given a rapid COVID-19 test as a precaution.
On Wednesday, in a meeting with nurses who were near him in the Oval Office, Trump noted that they had all been tested for the coronavirus and said he hoped the tests would work. A guest coughed several times, into her hands, during the event.
