US President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden emerged as the second most tweeted about people on Twitter by 2020, according to the annual year-end review of the microblogging site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also ranked in the top 10 most tweeted on the list of people and ranked seventh on the list.
Indian-American vice president-elect Kamala Harris was the only woman on the list and ranked 10th globally.
“People continued to use Twitter to publicly advocate for political change and hold world leaders accountable this year. In 2020, more than 700 million tweets were sent about elections around the world and Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Narendra Modi and Kamala Harris were among the most tweeted global figures, “reads a blog post by Tracy McGraw, Twitter’s global director of consumer communications.
According to the blog post, it was no surprise that the most popular hashtag used by most people this year was none other than # COVID19.
More than 68 million people around the world have been infected by the virus, including 1.55 million people who succumb to the virus.
“Not only did the hashtag (and other variations) tweet nearly 400 million times, but we also saw the ways it changed the way we tweet on so many other topics … With much of the world staying home longer, In fact, #StayHome was the third largest hashtag of the year, we saw a change in habits through Twitter, “reads later.
Meanwhile, the second most-tweeted hashtag of the year was #BlackLivesMatter due to the George Floyd murders sparking protests against police brutality not only in the US but also around the world.
“The world mobilized and amplified the need for equality and social justice after the death of George Floyd, who was the third most tweeted person globally,” the blog post reads. Floyd is also third on the list when it comes to the most tweeted person on the list.
The list of most-Tweeted people also included former President Barack Obama, rapper Kanye West, and basketball legend Kobe Bryant.
