It’s unclear how long the standoff will last and where it will all lead, but one thing is becoming clear: Hardliners on both sides are becoming increasingly agitated, with vengeful shouts of “Lock it up!” amid a growing political chasm on everything from pandemic control measures to certifying election results. Experts warn that the stalemate could exacerbate the pandemic, as the incoming administration is denied access to vital information to meet the challenge, including vaccine development and distribution.
While the General Services Administration has yet to acknowledge Biden’s victory and begin the formal transition as required by law, it is reported that some Trump administration officials and Republican lawmakers are informally reaching out to Biden’s campaign, putting the national interest in partisan politics, while keeping an eye and an ear for a president who is quick to punish what he sees as treason. With time running out for formal certification of results by states, the defeated president is urging Republican officials and courts in at least four battlefield states to declare him the winner despite losing the popular vote by holding that tens of thousands of ballots are invalid because they were late or were cast without Republican observers being absent or because the signatures did not match, arguments that have been dismissed by several courts.
Election officials in Georgia and Wisconsin have said a recount of votes they have taken is not likely to change President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in those states. Trump’s lawyers are also moving forward with more legal challenges in Pennsylvania despite several humiliating setbacks.
Yet in a new tactic, Trump insists that “thousands of uncounted votes (were) discovered in Georgia counties,” while urging partisan state governor Brian Kemp, who Democrats have long claimed that he has tried to repress black voters, to make a signature party that would overturn the state Republican. “Today’s important press conference of lawyers on a very clear and viable path to victory. The pieces are fitting together very well,” he tweeted.

Democrats allege that Trump’s effort to subvert the results is focused on invalidating the votes of cities that are majority black or have a significant black population, including Atlanta in Georgia, Detroit in Michigan, Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. “Voter fraud in Detroit is rampant and has been for many years!” the defeated president tweeted on Thursday.
Trump won Michigan by just 10,000 votes in 2016. He did not allege voter fraud at the time and Hillary Clinton did not contest the result.
The defeated American president also continued to make light of the resurgence of the pandemic, preferring to look on the bright side of things. “THE COVID DRUGS THAT ARE NOW AVAILABLE TO IMPROVE YOURSELF ARE INCREDIBLE, BUT THE MEDIA WAS TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE! The death rate is down 85%!” he said, adding: “VACCINES ARE COMING FAST !!!”

Front-line healthcare workers and medical personnel are expected to get the first preference for vaccines and they won’t be widely available to the general public until March-April at least, according to expert estimates. By then, the stagnation and lack of consensus on measures to control the spread of the virus are expected to result in tens of thousands more deaths.
