Station House Officer Mohammad Asif Khan of Munsiyari Police Station said, “We have identified a trailer driver hailing from Almora for careless driving and causing damage to public property under relevant sections of IPC on Tuesday. “
“We took action after receiving a complaint from Assistant Engineer Jayveer Singh of the department concerned, accusing him of crossing the bridge despite several warnings by construction workers,” Khan said.
The police officer said that the accused has not yet been arrested as he is still undergoing treatment in the hospital despite being seriously injured in the accident. The excavator operator was also seriously injured.

So far, the population of about 7,000 people living in different villages of the bridge has been cut off due to the collapse of a lone bridge in the area connecting the main town of Pithoragarh, ”Khan said.
“The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has already started repair work on the war footing and will soon be repaired in the next 5-6 days,” said the police officer who went to the spot to investigate the repair work.
The important bridge is about 65 km short of the India-China border. The trailer was taking the excavator to the Lillam Valley near the border and was to be used in a road project of BRO.
At the time of the incident, construction work was going on for another bridge near a collapsed bridge which was not in good condition. When the trailer arrived there, workers warned the driver not to cross it as the bridge was only able to bear the weight of a four-wheel vehicle at a given time. But the driver paid no attention and tried to cross it as the bridge collapsed.
