Based on a referral from the Uttar Pradesh Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with a case of alleged tampering with Television Rating Points (TRP).
The case, which was previously registered at the Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow by a complaint from a promoter of an advertising company, was handed over to the CBI by the Uttar Pradesh government, the PTI news agency reported citing officials from the government.
The main allegations relate to TRP tampering with a payment, they said.
TRPs or TV Rating Points of a channel or show are used to measure the popularity of ad agencies that affect prices.
PRTs represent how many people, from which socioeconomic categories, watched which channels for how long during a particular period. This could be for an hour, a day, or even a week.

The data is generally released every week and forms the basis of the channels’ claims to be the “most viewed” during that period.
Points are calculated in India by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) using a device installed in more than 45,000 homes across the country called the “Bar-O-Meter”.

Recently, the Mumbai Police had said that they had bungled a “fraudulent” manipulation “fraud” of the Television Rating Points (PRT) involving three channels, including Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV.
Six people have been arrested by police in the scam, which allegedly involves inducing households that make up the sample set whose television viewing is monitored to ensure certain channels get higher ratings.
