Without work since the closure was imposed to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, ten Bangladeshi citizens, who entered the country illegally, were arrested near the Indo-Bangla border in the city of Agartala on Friday while trying to return.

The workers were arrested in the Rajnagar area of Joypur, near the Indo-Bangla border. They had crossed the international border with the help of an agent who was passing seven months ago.

“We returned 7 months to work as daily bets. We stayed in the poor neighborhood of Bitterban here. There is no work these days due to the blockage. So we were going back to Bangladesh, ”citizen Masud Rana, one of the detained citizens of Bangladesh, told reporters.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, Tripura Police Director Rajiv Singh said that during the investigation it was determined that they had indeed returned between 6 and 7 months within Indian territory. They would be produced before the court according to protocol.

Earlier this week, the Border Security Force (BSF) had claimed that smuggling and border infiltration have been reduced to almost zero during the shutdown.

Despite the fact that the BSF reduced its personnel in light of the recent COVID-19 outbreak at two of its battalion headquarters, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and Tripura police personnel were deployed as a second line of defense close to borders to boost vigil.
