The actress left for London on September 27 to shoot a movie, but her office alerted authorities.
“We have raised the matter with the Bengal government and the Foreign Ministry, who in turn are coordinating with the Indian Embassy in London (UK) for protection, as an additional security measure,” said a close collaborator. to NDTV.
“Ms. Jahan has always defended her secular and inclusive views and these trolls do not deter her,” he added.
With hours of Ms. Jahan posting a video and photos of her photoshoot for the ad, in which she is dressed as the goddess and holding a trishul (trident), threats began to appear on his timeline, from India and Bangladesh, according to sources.
This is not the first time that Ms. Jahan has been threatened and abused for her views or position on issues. She was abused for marrying a Hindu, wearing ‘sindoor‘or vermilion and participating in rath yatra shortly after. Photos of her in Durga Puja pandals last year with her husband went viral and led to abuse.
Not only Ms. Jahan, her party colleague and MP Mimi Chakraborty also faced abuse for playing the role of goddess Durga in a dance drama on an entertainment channel to celebrate Mahalaya on September 17, which is an auspicious day in the Durga Puja calendar of Bengal.
A handful of critics reportedly criticized Ms Chakraborty for some tattoos on her arms that were reportedly visible during the performance as the goddess.
Ms. Jahan had recently complained to the Kolkata Police Cyber Cell about an unauthorized use of her photo by a video chat and dating app. No police report has yet been filed about the abuse that flooded her Instagram account after her photos of “Goddess Durga”.
