Calcutta:
Trinamool Congress women leaders criticized the BJP’s national secretary general, Kailash Vijayvargiya, accusing him of posting a misogynistic tweet against West Bengal’s chief minister and party leader, Mamata Banerjee.
Mr. Vijayvargiya shared a photo of Ms. Banerjee, showing her cooking in a tribal village, on Twitter and, in an accompanying statement, said in Hindi: “Didi has already started to do the work that will have to do after 5 months. “
Ms. Banerjee’s photo was taken in the village of Ballavpur, where she had stopped for some time while returning to Kolkata from Birbhum district last week. The assembly election in the state must be held between April and May of this year.
Reacting to Vijayvargiya’s message, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that the country is full of BJP misogynists who believe that a woman’s place is in the kitchen.
“If you are a woman and have aspirations to join active politics, remember: our country is plagued by BJP MISOGINISTS like these who plan to send women back to the kitchen,” Ghosh Dastidar tweeted.
“I cannot imagine the lack of respect that the women of the Kailash Vijayvargiya family must face,” said the doctor-turned-politician.
Actor-turned-party MP Nusrat Jahan said: “Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya’s comments are COMPLETELY MISOGINISTS! BJP crossed the mark by insulting all women who cook, support their families and have aspirations. Mamata Banerjee is the only one. Female CM in India nowadays and once again BJP attacks and abuses her. # Shameful. “
However, BJP Mahila Morcha’s state chairman Agnimitra Paul wondered how that tweet from Vijayvargiya could be misogynistic.
“Cooking cannot be a degrading job. Our mothers and grandmothers cooked for days to support the family. Millions of women, workers or housewives, cook with passion for their loved ones every day. There are thousands of male chefs who are proud of their work. How can the tweet be demeaning or misogynistic? “he told PTI.
Ms Paul, also a fashion designer, claimed that at a meeting in the past, TMC MP Abhisek Banerjee had asked the crowd if they would wear a sari and bracelet if they were attacked.
“Isn’t that degrading to Indian women? Wearing a saree and bracelets is the pride of Indian women. What would TMC’s women MPs have to say about it?” Asked Mrs. Paul.
Mamata Banerjee made a sudden detour and entered the tribal village while returning to Calcutta after concluding a two-day visit to Bolpur in Birbhum district on December 30.
She joined the tribal women and cooked vegetables during the surprise visit to the village.
Mr. Vijayvargiya that day had said that the prime minister’s sudden visit to the village was nothing more than a “drama”. His alleged misogynistic tweet was posted the next day.
