This would be the second month in a row that Airtel’s user base grew faster than Jio’s.
Airtel’s wireless user base grew 1.17% month-over-month to 326.6 million in September versus Jio’s growth of 0.36% to 404.1 million. Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 4.7 million subscribers and ended September with a user base of 295.5 million, the data showed.
The three main operators Jio, Airtel and Vi had market shares of 35.1%, 28.4% and 25.7% in that order.
In the fixed telephony segment, Jio was the one that gained the most with 303,205 additions, well above Airtel’s 66,335 million. Thus, Jio’s fixed telephony base with 2.1 million users has reached half of Airtel’s 4.4 million in the month of September.
Jio remained the operator with the largest inactive subscriber base of 85.9 million, about 21% of the total, in September. Meanwhile, 96.9% of Airtel users and 88.4% of Vi users were active.
The total broadband subscriber base grew 1.41% month-over-month to 726.3 million. The broadband market share of the three main operators was Jio 55.9%, Airtel 22.9% and Vi 16.5%.
Mobile number portability requests increased from 512.1 million in August to 520.8 million in September, the data showed.
