Police were also preparing to close the Delhi-Noida-Delhi highway, which connects Noida with South Delhi, in case protesting farmers in Uttar Pradesh tried to march towards the national capital, sources say.
Farmers protesting against the new farm laws continued their protest at the Noida-Delhi border for a second day on Wednesday. In the morning, the Noida Traffic Police advised travelers traveling to Delhi to avoid using the Chilla route and instead take the DND or Kalindi Kunj route.
However, at night, the Chilla border was partially opened for the movement of traffic.
Thousands of Punjab farmers marched to Delhi last week, braving water cannons, tear gas and milk loads along the way. The central government, which watches over the law and order of the national capital, did not allow them to enter at first; later, he said the protests should move to a location on the Burari outskirts of Delhi.
Most of the agitated farmers, however, have refused to move the protests to the government-designated location and are camping on the borders of Delhi, smothering the traffic movement.
Hundreds of farmers from western Uttar Pradesh reportedly want to come to Delhi to join the larger farmers’ agitation.
The Center claims that the new farm laws, by allowing farmers to sell their crops outside of designated markets, will eliminate middlemen. Farmers, however, fear the laws will make them susceptible to exploitation by powerful corporate companies.
