New Delhi:
Traffic movement was impacted on key roads in Delhi on Saturday as police kept the Singhu and Tikri borders closed for vehicles.
The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted that traffic movement from Azadpur and Outer Ring Road to the Singhu border was not allowed.
“We call on travelers to avoid traveling towards the borders of Singhu and Tikri, Mukarba Chowk, NH-44, GT-Karnal Road and Outer Ring Road,” said Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) Meenu Chaudhary.
With Saturday being a public holiday for most office goers, the traffic situation elsewhere is better than Friday, he said.
On Friday, Delhi police had curtailed movement in several places, including Dhansa, Jharoda Kalan, Tikri, Gurugram, Singhu and Chilla, to prevent protesting farmers from entering Delhi.
Sections of the outer ring road, Mukarba Chowk, GT Karnal Road, NH-44 were also closed.
The restrictions led to chaos and confusion among travelers who were trapped for hours.
Some of the chaos subsided later that day after police allowed farmers to enter the national capital.
Farmers, representing more than 30 agricultural organizations, have called a “Delhi Chalo” march through various routes: Lalru, Shambhu, Patiala-Pehowa, Patran-Khanauri, Moonak-Tohana, Ratia-Fatehabad and Talwandi-Sirsa .
They have been demanding that the central government repeal the new farm laws, which they say should be replaced by another set of framed legislation after wider consultation with stakeholders.
