Top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have stoked speculation that Trinamool Congress heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari would switch sides, a day before the former minister of state could clarify his position.
“He has already resigned. Time will tell what you want to do and how many more days you want. But in a day or two, the whole dilemma would end. I hope he joins the BJP, ”Mukul Roy told the media.
While Adhikari has already resigned from the cabinet and left office, he told TMC leadership earlier this week that he could not work for the party. Adhikari wrote a text message to Lok Sabha member Saugata Roy, saying that the problems he was having at TMC were far from over.
All eyes are now on the former minister’s press conference on Sunday that is scheduled to take place in the East Midnapore district, his hometown.

On Saturday, however, the chairman of the BJP’s Bengal unit, Dilip Ghosh, camped out in the Adhikari stronghold by demonstrating and lashing out at the TMC and attacking TMC supreme Mamata Banerjee.
“No matter what Adhikari does, TMC will never allow him to become a leader, because, in the TMC party, only those who come from a particular house in Kalighat can become leaders. The rest who gave their sweat and blood will always remain employees, ”said Ghosh, adding that BJP makes leaders.
The BJP state chairman cited the example of Mukul Roy, who was appointed the party’s national vice chairman after his resignation. TMC and joined the BJP.
Last week, hours after Adhikari resigned from Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, further widening its gap with the ruling party, the BJP began showing its muscles at a TMC citadel in the East Midnapore district, allegedly capturing the offices of multiple matches of the latter.
“BJP taking over the TMC party offices, Dilip Ghosh holding demonstrations in the Adhikari stronghold were unthinkable before. Things are not good in East Midnapore, ”said a TMC leader.
Banerjee is also scheduled to hold a rally in the West Midnapore district on December 7 and has ordered East Midnapore leaders to remain present.
The BJP leaders’ statements about Adhikari take on more importance because on Friday Banerjee had sent a strong message to the rebels within the party.
“Didi had sent a message loud and clear to all the rebels within the party. If they need to stay within the party, they will have to work for the party. Those who speak out against the party will not be tolerated. She, however, did not name a leader, ”said a senior TMC leader who attended Banerjee’s virtual meeting with TMC leaders from across the state.
