The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, celebrated the 23rd of its founding on Friday amid further setbacks at two of its prestigious West Bengal citadels.
Soumendu Adhikari, former president of Kanthi Township and brother of Suvendu Adhikari, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. Suvendu, the former MLA of Nandigram’s East Midnapore party, had defected to the BJP on December 20. Rabindranath Bhattacharya, TMC MLA of Singur, skipped the celebration of the founding day of the party in his constituency. An MLA from an adjacent constituency attended.
Singur and Nandigram are prestigious constituencies for the party because the massive movements against land acquisition in these two areas during 2006-08 paved the way for the political resurrection of Mamata Banerjees.

Earlier this week, Suvendu Adhikari had hinted at a BJP rally that all members of his family would soon be joining the saffron party.
“Let me tell you that the lotus will bloom in my house. Wait for Ram Navami and Basanti Puja, ”said Adhikari on December 29.
Three days later, his brother Soumendu joined the BJP in a rally led by Suvendu at Kanthi in East Midnapore. Previously, Soumendu was removed as head of the civic board by the TMC. He moved the higher court against that decision.
“Those who want to leave the party are free to do so. Mamata Banerjee had managed to uproot the 34-year-old Left Front regime. We are not concerned. We would win the polls again fighting under Mamata Banerjee, ”said Sheikh Sufian, TMC Senior Leader and Vice President of East Midnapore Parishad Zilla.
Rabindranath Bhattacharya, a veteran of the party and Singur MLA, had attacked party colleague Becharam Manna, Haripal’s MLA party in the same district. Although Bhattacharya could not be reached after he skipped Friday’s performance, Manna said: “An invitation was sent out to everyone for Friday’s founding day program. You could have other commitments. It will not be correct to see such things in bad light, especially on the foundation day. ”
TMC faced its first setback in Singur when opposition BJP gained an advantage in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Encouraged by their impressive gains in polls where the party won 18 out of 42 seats, the BJP has set itself the goal of winning. more than 200 seats in the 294-member legislative assembly.
