Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Jitendra Tiwari, who had stated that she was not allowed to work for the people and had left the party, said she was back at the party on Friday night. The MLA had also resigned from its position as a senior member of TMC.
Tiwari met with Minister Aroop Biswas in Calcutta and apologized. “Tiwari was in the party and will be in the party,” Biswas said, in a twist to pre-election desertions.
The leader was second after Suvendu Adhikari to leave the party before Union Interior Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state. TMC’s Silbhadra Datta also left the party on Friday.
“I have resigned from the position of president of the Board of Directors of the Municipal Corporation Asansol. If I am not allowed to work, what will I do with the post? So, I quit, ”Tiwari told the PTI news agency. “It makes no sense to stay at the TMC because I am not allowed to work for people,” he had argued.
A large number of TMC leaders are reportedly in contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and are likely to join it during Shah’s two-day visit to West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that BJP leaders are trying to coerce members of her party to withdraw and join the “saffron field.”
In the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, the TMC seeks to retain the highest seat, while the BJP is campaigning hard to deny Banerjee a third consecutive term.
