NEW DELHI: A “tiny technical leak” occurred at the Visakhapatnam chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh, where styrene gas leaked in the early hours of Thursday but was controlled and the neutralization process is underway, they said Friday officials.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the National Research Institute for Environmental Engineering (NEERI) are on the ground to support local administration.
A Union Interior Ministry official said media reports indicated that there was a second gas leak at the Visakhapatnam factory on Thursday night.
“It was clarified that this was a minuscule technical leak. It is required to control the container. It has been controlled and the neutralization process is already underway. The situation is under control,” said the official.
The NDRF and NEERI teams are on the ground to support the local administration, according to the official.
The Center said Thursday that 11 people died and 1,000 were exposed to the gas leak at the chemical factory.
At least 25 people are in critical condition after being exposed to the gas, authorities said.
