Nirvendra Kumar Mishra, a three-time former member of the National Liberation Army, was allegedly killed on Sunday in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh, over an alleged case of land dispute.
Some locals allegedly carried out the crime near the Trikolia Padhua bus station. Mishra’s relatives said the men came with weapons to seize the land, and the former MLA and his son Sanjeev Mishra were attacked as they resisted the action. Mishra’s son was injured in the incident and is now being treated at a hospital. The matter of the land dispute is reportedly in court as well.
After the incident, Mishra and his son Sanjeev were rushed to hospital, where the former MLA was pronounced dead. Sanjeev’s condition remains critical. Shortly after Mishra’s death, her supporters gathered in large numbers and started a protest by keeping her body on the road near the Trikolia bus station.
Mishra was in a dispute with a Sameer Gupta and a Radheshyam Gupta, who are residents of Pallia, over the land in question. The disputed land was in Sameer’s name and Mishra allegedly opposed its possession. A case under article 107/116 had previously been registered against Mishra and her son.
Mishra’s relatives have alleged that UP police are in cahoots with the alleged killers. The 75-year-old victim was a three-time member of the Nighasan Assembly Seat justice; she had won twice as an independent candidate and once with a Samajwadi Party candidacy.
“There was a land dispute between the two parties due to which former MLA Nirvendra Mishra got into an altercation, in the course of which he fell to the ground,” said a senior police official.
“They rushed him to a Community Health Center in Pallia and then took him to another hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the police officer said. They added that no wound marks were found on his body until then.
“We are now going to the scene and further action will be taken based on our investigation,” the police officer said.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress has attacked the government of the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Yogi Adityanath, for the incident, claiming that the law and order situation in the state was “discouraging”.
“Former member of the Legislature Nirvendra Kumar Mishra was assassinated in Lakhimpur. The Jungle Raj of Uttar Pradesh is getting scarier, the Yogi government is sleeping, ”the UP chapter of Congress said in a tweet.
The leader of the BSP, Mayawati, also condemned the incident. “The brutal murder of former UP MLA Lakhimpur Kheri Shri Nirvendra Kumar Mishra aka ‘Munna’ and after the rape of a student in the same district, these murder incidents are extremely sad and disturbing,” he said in a tweet.

“The government must take such strict measures against the culprits, so that these painful incidents are stopped in the state,” he added.

SP leader Akhilesh Yadav said the state was “shocked” by the brutal murder of the former MLA. “In the presence of the police today, the state has been shaken by the brutal murder of Shri Nirvendra Munna ji, who was a member of the National Liberation Army three times, in Lakhimpur in broad daylight. Condolences. Under the government of the BJP, the people of the state are not only concerned about law and order, but they are also afraid, ”he said in a tweet.
The incident has re-energized Brahmin politics ahead of the state assembly elections. Politicians had already been pushing to woo the upper caste after the Vikas Singh encounter and the announcement of the Lord Parshuram statue.
Holding on to the narrative, the Opposition has viewed the death of the MLA as yet another piece of evidence of atrocity against the community. Congressional leader and spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala asked on Sunday if leaders of the “Brahmin community” were being targeted by criminals in the state.
“Uttar Pradesh becomes a criminal state. Murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping by organized crime have sunk the soul of Uttar Pradesh. The case of former legislator Nirvendra Kumar Mishra is proof of this. Are the leaders of Brahmin society the target of criminals ?? “Surjewala said in a tweet.
With less than 18 months to go to the polls expected in early 2022, it is the issue of ‘Brahmin discontent’ that is increasingly becoming a hot political issue under Yogi Adityananth’s rule in the state. It has raised concern among top leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party and given the opposition a chance to make some progress.
In the last 8 months, eight Brahmin criminals have been killed in clashes. Vikas Dubey and his henchmen involved in the Kanpur Vikru case were among the eight killed. Most of the encounters took place in Meerut with 14 murders, followed by 11 in Muzaffarnagar, nine in Saharanpur, seven in Azamgarh and five in Shamli.
