Srinagar:

A 40-year-old lawyer was shot and killed in his home by suspected terrorists in Srinagar today, police said. The lawyer, Babar Qadri, was a regular on television news debates and used to write opinion pieces in local newspapers. Police said he was hit by a single bullet.

Just three days ago, he tweeted a screenshot and asked the police to file a case against a Facebook user for spreading an “incorrect campaign” against him.

“I urge the State Police administration to register FIR against this Shah Nazir who has spread a wrong campaign that I work for agencies. This false statement may lead to a threat to my life,” Qadri wrote in his last tweet.

The attackers fled after shooting the lawyer, police said, adding that they took him to SKIMS Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Qadri is the second public person to be shot dead by terrorists in the past 24 hours. Bhupinder Singh, chairman of the block development council in Budgam district, was shot and killed on Wednesday night.
