London:
Three British Sikhs have been arrested in the UK on suspicion of an assassination conspiracy in India dating back to 2009, according to UK police.
The arrests followed morning raids Monday on extradition warrants executed by West Midlands police and all three were released on bail at Westminster Magistrates Court in London under “strict conditions.”
“Three men were arrested on Monday (December 21) by West Midlands Police following extradition orders issued by Westminster magistrates,” West Midlands Police said in a statement.
“Two men, aged 37 and 40, were arrested in Coventry and a 38-year-old man was arrested in Wolverhampton. They were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder in India in 2009,” the statement said.
The trio is now expected to undergo procedures for extradition to India, and some Sikh separatist groups in the UK claim that Home Secretary Priti Patel has signed an order for such procedures.
The Sikh Press Association released a statement on behalf of the arrested men and claimed that they had been detained in connection with the 2009 murder of Rulda Singh, a high-ranking member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who was shot in Patiala and died a week after the attack. Furthermore, it alleges that the development is related to the visit of the UK’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to India earlier this year.
“If all three are extradited, they will almost certainly be tortured and have no chance for a fair trial,” said Bhai Amrik Singh, president of the Sikh Federation of the United Kingdom.
