NEW DELHI: The third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the national capital is not over yet, but “is definitely on the wane,” Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Thursday.
Delhi recorded 2,463 new Covid-19 cases and 50 deaths on Wednesday, the lowest number of deaths in a single day since November 1.
As the positivity rate dropped to 3.42 percent, Jain tweeted on Wednesday that it was encouraging to see the national capital is “emerging victorious” in the battle against the coronavirus.
“Cases are declining and the one-day death count is the lowest in 40 days. The situation has improved, and we can definitely say that the third wave of the pandemic here is waning. It is not over, but it is declining. “he told reporters Thursday.
On Covid-19 vaccination plans, he said, healthcare workers and front-line personnel will receive the vaccine first, followed by the elderly and then others.
“If we have available vaccines, we can vaccinate the entire population in a week, we have the preparations ready,” he added.
When asked about non-Covid-19 patients who need ICU beds, he said: “We will review the situation. But ICU beds cannot be managed overnight, if cases suddenly increase, so what we first had to see that the trend stabilized “.
He stated that there are more than 13,000 beds available to Covid-19 patients in Delhi, which “does not exist in any city in the country,” adding that there are also 2,500 ICU beds available to them.
When asked how many people had signed up for the Covid-19 vaccine, he said, around two lakh as of Wednesday.
He reiterated that the overall positivity rate is less than 5 percent for the past seven days.
Additionally, the RT-PCR positivity rate has now dropped to 6 percent, and since early November, a drop of around 80 percent in the positivity rate, which is a satisfactory trend, Jain said.
