The BJP seeks to overthrow the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state, where the party, led by Banerjee, came to power in 2011 after ending the 34-year-old government of the left and extended its term in 2016. As part of the BJP In the election campaign, it was decided last month that Amit Shah and JP Nadda will take turns visiting Bengal every month and will be in the state for at least two days on each visit.

It was during one such visit on December 10 that Nadda’s convoy came under fire as it headed to the Diamond Harbor area in the 24 Parganas district of southern West Bengal from Kolkata, prompting a series of heavy exchanges between the Center and the state government.

The West Bengal Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police were summoned to Delhi for the attack. In response, Banerjee’s TMC party alleged that the Center was using coercive means to intimidate the state administration.

“We want to inform you that law and order are within the domain of the state under the 7th Annex of the state list … How, regarding the law and order situation, can you call both officers for any kind of discussion?” TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said in a letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Saturday.

“It seems that with a political motive and at the request of your minister, who is a political person belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party, you have issued such a letter. He is trying to coerce West Bengal officials with political revenge. It appears that it is interfering with the federal structure, ”added Banerjee.
