TVS has clarified that Norton motorcycles will continue to be built in the UK, and there are no plans to launch a smaller displacement bike either.
TVS Motor Company recently announced its acquisition of the motorcycle brand Norton Motorcycle Company based in Birmingham, UK, in a cash deal in the amount of GBP 16 million (around Rs 153.2 crore) through one of the overseas subsidiaries of TVS Motor. Now, the local manufacturer has verified that it has no plans to move the bicycle manufacturing to India from the UK.
Sudarshan Venu, Joint Chief Executive Officer, TVS Motor Company, said that Norton motorcycles will continue to be manufactured in the UK, and that despite the change in ownership, the design and assembly team will be retained. Venu clarified that Norton is a premium motorcycle brand and that the acquisition of TVS will not change that. Therefore, any consideration to relocate the brand’s production to India has been ruled out. Instead, Norton will benefit from TVS Motor Company’s global supply chain and network strength.
He also reiterated that there are no plans for a smaller displacement model by the name of Norton, not even a mass market offering. “Norton is a brand that delights this unique segment of customers worldwide, with these very powerful and high-end engines. So the idea is to build on that legacy and those products, and focus on them for now. We want to focus on this premium segment, or this really premium segment that Norton serves. ” Mr. Venu said.
Norton already sells two motorcycles in the Indian market through MotoRoyale, the business owned by Kinetic Engineering that deals with high-end motorcycles. Both bikes include Commando 961 Cafe Racer and Dominator. Both the Command and Dominator draw power from a fuel-injected, 961 cc, air-cooled, two-cylinder parallel engine that produces 70.94 hp of peak power at 7,500 rpm, along with 67 Nm of peak torque at 6,500.
Transmission tasks are handled by a 5-speed gearbox, and both bikes have a top speed of 199 kmph. The Norton Commando is priced in India at Rs 20.99 lakh, while the Dominator is sold at a starting price of Rs 23.70 lakh (both ex-showroom prices).
