Mumbai Agricultural Products Market Committee (
APMC) located in the Vashi area of Navi Mumbai will remain closed from 11 to 17 May, citing an increasing number of COVID-19 positive patients. Workers and merchants fear they may become infected with the coronavirus.
The administration of APMC and NMMC will carry out the disinfection of the market facilities and will carry out tests. The market will remain open this Saturday and Sunday. The decision to close the five markets was made after a meeting with Maharashtra’s chief (marketing) secretary Anoop Kumar, IAS officer Sanjeev Jaiswal, and other top bureaucrats.
As a result, food, vegetables, fruit, the onion, potato and spice markets will be completely closed. Meanwhile, merchants and workers will be inspected during market hours.
The APMC market is the main supplier of grains, vegetables, fruits and spices to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and is among the largest complexes of its kind in the country.
Navi Mumbai Commissioner Annasaheb Misal told Mirror Online that APMC’s marketing department is ensuring sufficient supply for MMR and the Thane district. More than 4,000 APMC workers have been screened as merchant detection of the infection begins.
