New York: The US Food and Drug Administration. USA He did a second review of his position on the risks of Covid-19 and nicotine, saying that cigarettes also increase the chances of contracting the disease.
“People who smoke cigarettes may have an increased risk of infection with the virus that causes Covid-19, and may have worse Covid-19 results,” the agency said in an email response to a question from Bloomberg News.
Earlier this month, the FDA had said that smokers may have worse Covid-19 results, but had not been explicit about whether that included their chances of getting the virus in the first place.
The clarification occurs when researchers and regulators compete to study the new virus. There are almost 2.5 million confirmed cases and more than 171,000 deaths worldwide from Covid-19. The estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide who smoke and 41 million people who use vape so far have received varying guidance on the potential threat of the virus from public health agencies.
Cigarette makers, such as Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc., say people should consult government health authorities and medical professionals for advice. “Nicotine and tobacco products are not without risks, and the best thing to do is to quit smoking completely. Those who don’t quit should consider switching to regulated smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, “said Philip Morris spokesman Corey Henry.
With a disease that has only been studied for a few months, regulators and researchers have scrutinized ancient data on how smoking affects people with the flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia. They are also advancing new studies on vaping, which has not been around for as long as smoking. The FDA noted in its April 14 statement that cigarette smoking “causes heart and lung disease, suppresses the immune system, and increases the risk of respiratory infections.”
In its March 27 statement on the risks, the FDA had said that vaping and smoking only posed an increased risk for the coronavirus in people who had underlying conditions.
Some groups have said that vaping can be safer than smoking.
