By making economic revival a top priority while recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tamil Nadu government has released a list of independent outlets that may reopen starting today. Under the rules, only small, non-air-conditioned jewelry and textile showrooms located in rural areas are allowed to open.
In Chennai, independent and neighborhood stores can be opened from 10.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. compared to the previous closing time of 5 p.m. The state government has listed 34 types of companies that can operate in non-containment areas with conditions such as social distancing as of today.
The opening of motorcycle / two-wheeler exhibitions and automobile sales and services, companies engaged in auto parts, are permitted.
Stores that sell tiles, building materials, cement, sanitary ware, appliances, and optics may operate. “Only small jewelry stores and textile shops will be allowed without air conditioning and located in rural areas,” an official statement said.
They can operate retail outlets dedicated to the sale and service of a range of consumer items such as electrical products, mobile phones, motors, mixie, grinder and television.
Dry cleaners, truck reservation service companies, copy shops, courier service companies, plywood stores, sawmills, paint stores, among other companies that were allowed to operate.
Tea shops, bakeries and restaurants may only offer take-away services.
The grocery and vegetable stores that were allowed to operate through the shutdown since March 24 can continue to operate as usual.
The Tamil Nadu government has already allowed private sector companies to resume work with a 33% workforce. The government has also extended grocery and vegetable store hours from 5 pm to 7 pm, starting Monday, throughout Tamil Nadu. These points of sale can start working from 6 a.m., as usual.
On May 4, after being closed for 40 days, independent retail outlets engaged in businesses like construction supplies and computers resumed their business in non-containment areas in Tamil Nadu after the curbs relaxed.
Tamil Nadu Prime Minister K. Palaniswami said the government has established a high-level committee on the state’s economic recovery. “We have already established a working group focused on attracting companies to establish their base in our state,” he said.
According to him, these are the first of many steps that the government is going to take in the direction of rebirth and growth. “We are resilient and we will rebuild our state as we emerge from this crisis,” said Palaniswami.
