Several states in the northern part of India reported a high positivity rate (confirmed cases per 100 tests), between 10% and more than 15%, and emerged as new coronavirus hot spots.
These states have shown an increase in the positivity rate indicating that more people are infected and fewer tests are being done. The exceptions are Kerala, Goa and West Bengal, where the disease has slowed down somewhat compared to last month, but they still remain in the danger zone.
Maharashtra, with a positivity rate of 8% during the last fortnight, has shown a significant improvement, as it has been constantly around 18% during the last months. The number of confirmed cases in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh has slowed but nonetheless the two states have a positivity rate of over 7-8%.
Relaxation of lockdown measures in these states remains risky, as a WHO advisory says a positivity rate of 5% or more over a 14-day period puts a state in the red zone.
India’s Covid-19 case burden topped 91 lakh with 44,059 coronavirus infections reported in one day, while recoveries rose to 85,62,641, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. The 511 new deaths include 121 from Delhi, 50 from Maharashtra, 49 from West Bengal, 35 from Uttar Pradesh, 27 from Kerala and 25 from Haryana.
