The security drill begins as train services to Punjab are likely to resume from Monday

The inspection of the railways began today in Punjab under the supervision of the railway authorities, as freight train services are likely to be restored as of late Monday night after almost two months of suspension due to the protests of farmers in the state over the railway towers.

Sources say freight trains may be a priority, while passenger train services may resume operations as of Tuesday.

Ambala Divisional Rail Manager (DRM) GM Singh said the rail board could publish a detailed train schedule on Monday.

“After nearly two months of blocking trains in Punjab, a joint team of the Punjab government railway police, the railway protection force and technical teams began a track safety audit today. They are examining to make sure the tracks have no damage. Light motors are also placed on the tracks to measure the resistance of rail lines in the state, ”Singh said.

The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee had started the ‘rail roko’ agitation on September 24 to oppose the central farm laws. Subsequently, several farmers’ unions expanded their support for the railway blockade.

Sources said some 2,300 passenger trains have been canceled or diverted since the farmers began protests in September.

On Saturday, Punjab Prime Minister Amarinder Singh announced the unanimous decision of the leaders of 31 farmers’ unions to withdraw the ‘rail roko’ agitation.

The unions have already announced that the train blockade will be lifted only for 15 days and if the central government does not withdraw the three agricultural laws, they will restart the agitation.
