Former Union finance minister and senior congressional leader P Chidambaram welcomed the Center’s move on Monday to begin operating some interstate passenger trains starting May 12 amid the coronavirus blockade.
“The same modest opening should start with road transport and air transport,” Chidambaram said in a tweet.
He said that the opening of road, rail and air services for passengers and goods is the only way to start economic and commercial activity in the country.
“We appreciate the government’s decision to cautiously start interstate passenger train operations,” the Chidambaram tweet read.

The central government announced Sunday that 15 interstate passenger trains will begin operating on May 12 after services stopped in March due to the enforcement of the national coronavirus blockade.
“Indian Railways plans to gradually restart passenger train operations beginning May 12, 2020, initially with 15 pairs of trains. These trains will run as special trains from the New Delhi station that connects 15 major cities in the country, ”the railway ministry announced in a tweet on Sunday.
Trains will operate from New Delhi connecting Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Central Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
The passenger ticket reservation process will begin today at 4 p.m. through the online booking service provided on the IRCTC website. Passengers will be required to wear masks and observe all social distancing and precaution measures during their journey. The authorities will examine them at the station and only asymptomatic travelers will be allowed.
The resumption of passenger trains will help those who have been stranded. This is also for those who need to return to work and have been trapped since the shutdown, authorities said.
