The Defense Ministry on Monday approved the acquisition of weapons and military equipment worth 2,290 million rupees, including about 72,000 Sig Sauer assault rifles from the United States, authorities said.

The procurement proposals were approved at a meeting of the Defense Procurement Council (DAC), the highest procurement decision-making body of the Ministry of Defense.

In addition to approving the proposal to purchase the rifles, the other notable acquisitions approved by the DAC include the acquisition of Intelligent Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAAW) systems for the Indian Navy and Air Force, the officials said.

“The DAC headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh approved various weapons and equipment worth 2,290 million rupees,” the Defense Ministry said.

The acquisition cost of the Sig Sauer assault rifles for the front-line troops of the Indian Army will be 780 million rupees, authorities said.

They said that the DAC also granted approval for the acquisition of HF Tans static receivers in the Indian purchase category at a cost of Rs 540 crore. The HF radio equipment will allow seamless communication for Army and Air Force field units.

The military equipment is being procured at a time when the Indian military is locked in a bitter border dispute with China in eastern Ladakh.
