A 29-year-old man texted his fiancee saying “thank you for the best life” before he went into a coma and then died after testing positive for coronavirus.
Richard McKeag, known as Ricky, had been working on-call care support shifts before hiring Covid-19, his partner Katie Martin, 25, said.
Miss Martin, a registered care manager with a life support service for people with learning disabilities, said web designer McKeag began working with her as a recruiting manager after the pandemic broke out.
The couple, from Bacup in Lancashire, had been working on-call support shifts before contracting the virus in early April.
She said, “I started with a cold and sneezing and Ricky started with a bad cough and was struggling to breathe properly when walking.
“We both had to isolate ourselves. Because we were key workers we were able to test and on April 13 we received a text message saying we were positive for Covid.”

Ms. Martin said she called 111 on April 16 because she was concerned about Mr. McKeag and that he was taken by ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital.
After 24 hours of trying to give him oxygen, the doctors made the decision to put Mr. McKeag in a coma and with a ventilator, he said.
Miss Martin spoke to her partner, originally from Hyde in Greater Manchester, for the last time on Facetime after one of the nurses called her.
She said, “He was the one who tried to calm me down and told me everything was going to be fine.”
“He said, ‘I love you, please tell my grandmother that I love her.’
“After we talked, he texted and said ‘thank you for the best life.'”
On Wednesday, Ms. Martin received a call from the hospital telling her that Mr. McKeag had died.
She said: “The most difficult thing is that I was not allowed to go and be with him, I was not allowed to sit with him, I received a call saying that he had died.
“I am not allowed to see him now or go to the morgue.
“I had been with him since I was 18 and we lived together for five years, I just don’t know life without him.
“We were planning to move to a bigger place and we wanted to get married next year, but we didn’t have a fixed date.”
“We were also going to have a baby.”
The couple had been engaged since 2017, when McKeag proposed on the plane as they flew to Marrakech on vacation.
Mrs. Martin said: “It was the most embarrassing moment of my life, but I said yes, obviously.
“He was very romantic and he wanted everyone to know how much he loved me.”
He said that Mr. McKeag had suffered from asthma as a child but was otherwise healthy and had started regular gym sessions in the months leading up to his death.
She said: “He was really happy and he felt good, positive.
“We just think, ‘We are young, we are healthy, we are well, and there are other people who want to make sure they are well.'”
