The little matter of Virat Kohli ending without an ODI century in 2020 – cricket

Virat Kohli has reached that stage in his career where he sets and breaks records match after match. Well that sounded like hyperbole, but after more than a decade of international cricket, the Indian patron has definitely established himself as one of the greats of his generation, if not the greatest of all time.

Kohli’s machine-like consistency in the 50+ format has been the highlight of his career, putting him in a great position to break most of the records set by his idol Sachin Tendulkar. In the third match against Australia, Kohli surpassed the 12,000-run mark at ODI and also broke Tendulkar’s mark of being fastest at the milestone by a large margin.

But his firing on 63 meant that Kohli, known for his ability to turn the fifties into centuries, will end 2020 with no tons under his belt. This would be the first time since 2008, when he made his ODI debut, that Kohli would end a calendar year without a century under his belt.

But keep in mind the fact that Kohli and India played only 9 ODIs this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought all international cricket to a halt. Kohli has 5 half centuries of 9 entries, which shows how consistent it has been, but the century mark has escaped it.

His final century came in August 2019, when he scored tons in back-to-back games in the West Indies.

Kohli has gone 12 innings without scoring a century in ODI, but that surely won’t bother the Indian captain until such time as his team is winning. Kohli has been India’s best hitter for almost a decade and the Indian team would need their best hitter to come out with all his weapons next year.

The 2023 World Cup remains the big goal for Kohli and the India team, and the skipper will have to lead from the front and be in his prime for the team to win the Cup again at home.
