In the eye of the storm on Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s accusations against him, Judge NV Ramana said on Saturday that a judge must be brave, resist pressure and face all obstacles.
The greatest strength of the judiciary is people’s faith in it. Faith, trust and acceptability cannot be imposed, they must be earned.
“It is an important quality for a judge to resist all pressure,” Judge Ramana said at an online condolences meeting to pay tribute to former high court judge AR Lakshmanan, who died on August 27.
“There are countless qualities that a person needs to live what can be called a good life: humility, patience, kindness, a strong work ethic, and the enthusiasm to constantly learn and improve. Most importantly, especially for a judge, he must be firm in sticking to his principles and be courageous in decisions, “he said.
In his letter to CJI Bobde, Reddy had alleged: “Judge Ramana has been influencing the high court sessions, including the list of some judges and some cases of some matters important to Telugu Desam have been assigned to some judges.”
The content of the letter was made public at a press conference addressed by the Senior Advisor to the AP Chief Minister last week.
Justice Ramana, who will likely be the next Chief Justice of India after Justice SA Bobde leaves office in April 2021, said: “The greatest strength of the judiciary is the people’s faith in him. Faith, trust and acceptability cannot be imposed, they must be earned. “
Last month, Judge Ramana had expressed serious concern that judges became soft targets of criticism and subjects of juicy gossip on social media.
Quoting Judge Lakshmanan, Judge Ramana said today: “We, the members of the judicial hierarchy, have inherited the legacy of the dedicated collective effort by the Court and the Bar to establish an unbroken tradition of high efficiency, perfect integrity and fearless independence “.
