The seaplane service to provide air connectivity from the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad to the Statue of Unity at Kevadia in Gujarat will soon be open to the public. On October 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the service to mark the 146th anniversary of Sardar Patel’s birth. So now tourists coming to Gujarat from various parts of the world will soon have the option of flying aboard a seaplane.

What are seaplanes?

Seaplanes are usually fixed-wing aircraft with a much smaller number of seats and can take off and land on water. They have been in use since the 19th century.

Difference between an airplane and seaplane

  • The main difference between an airplane and a seaplane lies in their take-off and landing methods and capabilities.
  • The take-off and landing of an airplane is done from the ground, while the seaplane can take off and land in any large body of water: sea, river or lake.
  • The main technical difference between the airplane and the seaplane is during their take-off and landing operations; the former is assisted by a computerized control system, while the latter has a manual system for all operations.
  • The seaplane flies very low, compared to other commercial flights.
  • Their take-off and landing operations demand more skill from the pilot, since their operations must be carried out from a liquid surface (water).

The seaplane service will be operated by Spicejet Airline

The seaplane is a Twin Otter 300 registered to M / s Spicejet Technic, which will be operated by SpiceJet. A 19-seater seaplane to be used for flights between the bank of the Sabarmati River and the Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Distance between Ahmedabad and Kevadia

The air distance between Ahmedabad and Kevadia is about 200 kilometers. The seaplane will take about 45 minutes to cover the distance.

Ticket price for seaplane service

The Twin Otter 300 seaplane leased by Spicejet will be able to accommodate 12 passengers at the cost of 4,800 per person. The ticket price would be around 4,800 per person.

Four flights a day

There will be four daily flights per day (four arrivals and four departures).
