New Delhi:
The dates of the Bihar elections will be announced today by the Electoral Commission. This is the first major state election to take place amid a global coronavirus crisis.
Bihar has to elect a new assembly of 243 members before November 29. The elections are likely to take place in mid-October and in fewer phases this time.
Prime Minister Nitish Kumar, who leads a coalition with the BJP, will fight for a fourth term in these polls, with the RJD opposition of jailed former Chief Minister Lalu Yadav and Congress challenging him.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance includes Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United, the BJP, Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha, who recently left the opposition alliance.
Nitish Kumar has also exchanged partners since the 2015 elections, which his party contested with the RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and Congress after ending ties with the BJP over his 2013 decision to make Narendra Modi his candidate. to prime minister.
But within two years of the Mahagatbandhan, which saw rivals Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav unite after 25 years, their ties soured over allegations of corruption against the Yadav family, especially Tejashwi Yadav, who was Nitish Kumar’s No. 2 deputy chief minister.
Nitish Kumar resigned, left Lalu Yadav and Congress, and embraced the BJP again.
Over the past three years, Nitish Kumar’s alliance with the BJP has not been without its problems, but both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Interior Minister Amit Shah, the two top leaders of the ruling party, have made it clear that he will lead the NDA in these center.
But the ruling coalition’s seat-sharing talks are likely to be hampered by another issue, Chirag Paswan, which has been openly targeting Nitish Kumar.
