A low-pressure system is rapidly intensifying over southeast Bay of Bengal and is likely to develop into a cyclone storm around May 16 at night, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

In its latest forecast, the meteorological department said the low-pressure system has become more prominent and continues to gain strength. It can develop into a cyclonic storm before May 16 at night and initially move northwest until May 17. After that, it is expected to return northeast to the North Bay of Bengal on May 18 and 19.

If it intensifies to become a cyclone, it will be called Amphan (suggested by Thailand) and could be the first cyclone to form in the Northern Indian Ocean this year.

The meteorological department issued a warning that fishermen not venture into the south and center of the Bay of Bengal from Friday onwards and asked those at sea to return to shore immediately. Sea conditions would continue to be very harsh in the southern Bay of Bengal and by the Andaman Sea in the coming days.

Weather conditions are likely to prevail with a wind speed with wind gusts of up to 60 km / h throughout and north of Andhra Pradesh, on the south coast of Odisha, on May 18 onwards. Moderate rainfall is expected over parts of the Odisha coast and the Ganga coastal districts of West Bengal during the same period, while it is likely to rain heavily on the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
