The Covid pandemic has reached its peak in India; can be controlled at the end of February 2021: panel appointed by the government

New Delhi: A government-appointed panel said Sunday that the initial lockdown saved a large number of lives and avoided creating widespread panic.

The ‘Covid-19 India National Supermodel’ committee led by Professor M Vidyasagar (IIT Hyderabad) made the finding in their study titled ‘Progression of the Covid-19 Pandemic in India: Forecast and Lockdown Impacts’.

On June 1, the Department of Science and Technology formed a committee comprised of eminent scientists and academics to develop a national supermodel for the progression of Covid-19.

These are the most important findings of the study:

  • If all protocols are followed, the pandemic can be brought under control early next year with minimal active symptomatic infections by the end of February.
  • The upcoming festival and winter season can increase susceptibility to infections. Relaxation in protective measures can lead to a significant increase, up to 26 lakh of infections in a month.
  • The pandemic has reached its peak, but only if sufficient protective measures continue.
  • 30% of the population is expected to have antibodies today, up from 14% at the end of August.
  • Cumulative mortality is expected to be less than 0.04% of all infected.
  • All activities can be resumed as long as proper security protocols are followed.
