In good news for millions of Indians, Dr. Suresh Jadhav, executive director of the Serum Institute of India (SII), said on Saturday (October 17) that India would receive the COVID-19 vaccine in March 2021.
“India can receive COVID-19 vaccine by March 2021 as long as regulators accelerate the process as various manufacturers are working on it,” Jadhav said at the Indian e-Summit on Vaccine Accessibility organized by the HEAL Foundation in partnership with ICCIDD.
According to Dr. Jadhav, India will receive between 60 and 70 million doses of vaccines by December 2020, but they will hit the market in 2021 after the approval of the license.
Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered government officials to deliver and administer COVID-19 vaccines on the election lines.
“Three vaccines are in advanced stages of development in India, of which 2 are in Phase II and one in Phase III,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. “The Prime Minister further ordered that, taking into account the geographic spread and diversity of the country, access to the vaccine should be quickly guaranteed. The Prime Minister emphasized that every step in logistics, delivery and administration must be rigorously implemented, ”the statement added.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in India are approaching 75 lakh on Sunday (October 17) with 61,871 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. According to data from the Ministry of Health, the total coronavirus count in the country is 74,94,551. The number of cases experienced a drop of 11,776 from Saturday.
