Last week, Nath had referred to Imarti Devi as an “item” at an electoral meeting in the Dabra Assembly constituency (scheduled caste) in Gwalior district.
“Suresh Raje ji hamare ummeedvar hai … yeh uske jaise nah hai … kya hai uska naam … main kya uska naam lun? … apko toh mujhe pehle savdhan karna chahiye tha … yeh kya item hai. .. (Our candidate is not like her … what is her name? You know her better and you should have warned me before … What a topic!), Kamal Nath said in Hindi as the crowd shouted the name of Imarti Devi.
The comments had sparked outrage among BJP leaders, led by Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who organized protests in the state.
The National Commission for Women asked the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for an explanation for her comment.
Chouhan has also written to the president of Congress, Sonia Gandhi, asking her to condemn Nath’s comments and remove him from all party positions.
Kamal Nath had previously expressed regret for the comment and claimed that he had not said anything disrespectful.
